Designing for people that are smarter than you with tools that go faster than you..

Being under an NDA, this case study will focus on publically available information and my broad day to day while omiting metrics and detailed design work.

The Challenge

Quite a title, I know.. but when I joined, that's exactly how it felt.

I joined PhysicsX as its fifth designer. Historically a consultancy, PhysicsX has been on an entrepreneurial journey to transform into a product-led company. For designers, that meant being a relatively new concept to many colleagues and teams, so the design team had to define itself quickly to be heard.

When I joined, I knew next to nothing about simulation engineering or machine learning engineering. But Hamza Oza, design team lead at the time, believed in me, he saw potential in my experience across various complex fields and my ability to adapt fast.

Just like the wider design team, I had to prove myself, not just to the company, but to the field experts and simulation engineers whose needs, workflows, concepts and frustrations I'd have to quickly learn to understand.

And I did

It would be a lie to say this challenge wasn't conquered. From day one, I made a point of bringing design thinking into every conversation I joined. To keep up, I put together an engineering glossary that became so popular it's now part of the company onboarding toolkit. That effort helped me build strong relationships with client project leads and senior simulation teams, bridging gaps across disciplines.

After a few months of being closely mentored by Vladimir, I was trusted to become the sole designer on SimWB, a cross-tooling simulation engineering solution designed to be as flexible as a simulation engineer's day-to-day.

More recently, I've been championing the use of Figma Make to accelerate ideation and build realistic prototypes for user testing. It's quickly become essential for SimWB engineers , giving them a reliable source of truth they can check asynchronously, even when they're deep in complex work and away from upcoming design changes.

Today..

I work across all company guilds to deliver high-quality visuals for prospect calls, implementation-ready Figma designs for engineers, prototypes for sales demos, and thorough documentation for insight traceability.

I have full ownership of the product strategy and end-to-end design thinking for SimWB. I'm trusted by my engineering peers, and I also help build company culture by organising karaoke and board game nights.

At PhysicsX you trully feel what it means to be in a race.

This article will one day evolve into a proper case study, once I'm permitted to share more and further information about this project becomes public. Worth the wait, I promise!
